Underfloor heating upstairs
Create an underfloor heating system upstairs and downstairs to warm your house from top to bottom.

Can you have underfloor heating upstairs?
Absolutely you can! Whether you’re building a new house or renovating an existing property, underfloor heating (UFH) can be installed both upstairs and downstairs, so you can enjoy the comforting warmth of ambient heat wherever you need it.
All you’ll need to know is how the upper floors are supported. Modern houses with solid floors allow you to embed the pipework in screed. Otherwise, there are systems that can be placed within suspended timber floors, between POSI (also known as metal web or open web) joists/Truss Joist I-joists (TJI joists), and over solid floors.
UFH with suspended timber floors
There are a range of underfloor heating systems to choose from if you have suspended timber floors upstairs. You can:
- Lay the pipework and insulation within the joist bays so that it is concealed beneath the structural floor deck
- Install the system as a specially engineered structural floor deck containing all the pipework and insulation
- Use an overlay system placed on top of an existing structural floor deck, meaning you don’t need to lift any floorboards during a renovation.
UFH with solid floors
First floors with solid floors are becoming a feature of new build properties. These can be made of screed, beam and block, concrete planks, or Lewis decks. Here, you can embed the system in screed (as you would for the ground floor) assuming the floor has been specified to carry the additional weight.
If you are renovating an existing property with solid floors upstairs then you could consider fitting a low-profile overlay system; a quick, simple, and clean installation on top of the existing floor deck.

Other considerations around UFH upstairs
There are several considerations when planning your system, such as where to place the manifold unit, or what floor finish/es to apply (e.g. tiles, engineered boards, or carpet).
We recommend you talk to the supplier before purchasing your system so that they can advise you on the best options for your property.
Cost of underfloor heating upstairs
The cost of your underfloor heating will vary by system and project, however, for upstairs, our ClippaPlate® system – designed to be fitted either between or over joists with suspended timber floors – is typically the cheapest, and most commonly installed system.
Can I install my underfloor heating upstairs?
Underfloor heating systems that have been sourced from a single supplier should provide everything that would be needed for a successful installation, including fully compatible components which will deliver a confirmed and verified heat output.
We always advise getting your system professionally designed and installed. Our design team will provide you with detailed plans, including pipework layouts (essential if you’re laying your pipes between joists) and lifetime technical support.
Importance of UFH design
We strongly recommend you get an expert to design your underfloor heating system, particularly when laying pipework between joists.
This ensures that you optimise the heating output and accounts for factors such as the room layout, ceiling height, and the joist layouts.
Our project engineers deliver a dedicated service to customers and our design team are available to provide advice – including full and detailed plans, if required.
Choosing an UFH company
Working with a single company means you can be confident that your system will work to its optimum level of efficiency, taking into account the many factors associated with your project (e.g. insulation, heat source, ceiling heights, room layouts etc).
We offer award-winning customer service, a bespoke room-by-room heat loss design, and lifetime technical support. So, you can simply sit back and enjoy the warmth!
